Lesson in the word "organic"

Organic - Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations (USDA).

Certified organic food in the United States is grown according to standards set by the National Organic Program.

According to those standards, Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones.

Before a product can be labeled "organic," a USDA accredited certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Companies that handle or process organic food before it gets to your local supermarket or restaurant must be certified and inspected also.

Producers certified by CCOF have made the choice to grow and sell organic foods...CCOF supports this choice and you by providing information, resources and advocacy for organic food and agriculture. Please support the organic movement by supporting CCOF. Visit ccof.org for more information.

Certified Farmers Market - is an event which is comprised of many Certified Producers at one site offering a variety of agriculture products. The CFM allows the producer and consumer to be connected directly across the sales counter. The Certified Producer benefits from direct sales to his customer without the expense of the middle man, and the consumer is able to purchase fresh produce from the person who is responsible for its production. CFMs are not limited to producers from the county in which they operate; often Certified Producers from another county will participate in a CFM to add seasonal variety of products that are not available in the immediate production area.

Certified Producer - is a grower who sells their products at a Certified Farmers Market (CFM) directly to the consumer. A representative of the County Agricultural Department will conduct an onsite inspection of the growing grounds to verify that all products sold are produced by the Certified Producer (CP) The Certified Producer Certificate (CPC) will list all the products produced by the CP and be posted on the seller’s booth at the CFM for the potential buyers of produce to read. The Certified Producer Certificate is applicable only to the CP/CFM program and is not required for participation in PlacerGrown.
